根據最新一期時報周刊報導指出，行政院承諾要在年底前催生第五支職棒隊伍，立法院長王金平相中的對象是宏達電董事長王雪紅，認為HTC具備中華職棒所開出的財力、形象及代表性等條件，宏達電7日發出聲明回應指出，「公司會以HTC品牌理念審慎評估」。
　
時報周刊報導表示，中華職棒重現生機，5月27日立法院長王金平、教育部長蔣偉寧邀宴企業界贊助體育活動，各方積極勸進、相中第五隊是王雪紅的宏達電HTC，王金平請與會的宏達電代表將政府這項構想轉達給董事長王雪紅。

報導指出，宏達電成為勸進對象，並不是憑空而來，王金平認為，HTC具備中華職棒所開出的財力、形象及代表性等條件。黨政高層也表示，當天會議中熱烈討論，已請宏達電與會代表向王雪紅表達政府的想法，成局的機率不低。

根據時報周刊的報導，當天餐敘的企業包括台積電等7-8家國內頂級企業，宏達電由副董級代表出席，其中兩家企業，分別認捐3000萬、6000萬元支持體育界。對於職棒第五隊是否花落HTC？蔣偉寧表示，「不方便確認詳細狀況，但當天確實有談到代表轉達成立第五隊的消息」。
